Why we keep one Joomla extension free

Automatic Meta Description is the one extension in the Multizone Joomla directory that is free, with no subscription tier and no upgrade path. It writes the meta description tag for every page of a Joomla site automatically, based on the content of that page. Today's post is on why we don't charge for it.

What the extension does

Automatic Meta Description reads the content of a Joomla article or page and generates a meta description tag for the HTML head. The tag is what search engines use to assemble the snippet beneath the link in a result listing, and what social platforms read when generating link previews. Joomla does not generate one by default; the description field on each article is optional and often left blank.

The extension writes the tag for every page, automatically, using content from the page itself. No author intervention, no editorial pass, no per-article configuration unless you want it.

Why one extension is free

Two reasons.

The first is that this is a small extension. It does one job, has a small surface area for maintenance and security, and the cost of keeping it on the JED and up to date with Joomla and PHP versions is modest. Charging for it would feel disproportionate.

The second is that having one free extension in the directory does useful work for the rest of the catalogue. A Joomla site owner who installs Automatic Meta Description and finds it works as described has a low-stakes first experience of Multizone as a publisher. If the next extension they need is in our directory too, the trust to install it has been quietly built.

What it says about the rest of the catalogue

That paid extensions are not paywall traps. The same production approach, the same JED compliance, the same security work, the same support promise applies to all our extensions. The free one is free because the cost of charging would outweigh the value of the price. The others charge because the maintenance, security and feature work behind them is meaningful and ongoing, and the subscription funds ongoing work.

What it costs Multizone, and why we still do it

The maintenance work on Automatic Meta Description is a few hours a quarter: Joomla version testing, PHP version updates, occasional small fixes. The visibility on the JED and the goodwill in the Joomla community are worth more than that quarterly cost.

That is the calculation. There is no plan to monetise the extension. If the calculation changes, we will tell you here first.
