Subscriptions Manager, and what's next

Subscriptions Manager is the extension that issues, validates and manages the subscription keys for the other Multizone Joomla extensions. The newest release also lets it do the same job for third-party Joomla extension developers building their own subscription products. This is the seventh and last post in the series.

What Subscriptions Manager does for the Multizone extensions

Every paid Multizone Joomla extension talks to Subscriptions Manager. The 30-day free trial, the activation of a paid subscription key, the renewal reminders, the validation that the right key is present and the right tier is active: all of this is Subscriptions Manager, working behind the scenes. It is the spine of the subscription model that the previous six posts in this series have described.

Subscriptions Manager itself is a Joomla extension under the same model. It runs on the Joomla sites of agencies and developers who maintain customer Joomla installations and need a tidy way to track which sites are running which extensions and which subscriptions are due for renewal.

The Subscriptions Manager tier structure

Since this is the extension that runs the subscription model across the Multizone catalogue, it seems fitting to show its own tier structure as an example. The pattern (Trial, Standard, Premium, Enterprise) is the same across all paid Multizone extensions; the numbers and specific features change per extension.

The pattern across the catalogue: start with a free trial, upgrade at any time. Trial features carry on working after the 30 days at trial limits.

What it does for third parties

The recent release added third-party security key management. In practical terms: another Joomla extension developer who has built their own subscription-based extension can now use Subscriptions Manager to issue and validate keys for their extension, using the same security model and the same key infrastructure we use for our own.

The case for this is straightforward. Building secure key issuance and validation from scratch is significant engineering work that most extension developers would rather not redo. Using Subscriptions Manager as the key authority lets a third-party developer get to market faster, with security work that has already been reviewed and is being maintained continuously.

Why we built it

The accurate reason is that we needed it ourselves. The architecture for managing third-party keys is the same architecture we use for our own extensions; once it was there for our use, opening it up to others was a matter of polish rather than fresh engineering. The Joomla extension community benefits from a shared, maintained key infrastructure; we benefit from a wider testing pool and conversations with developers who use it.

What is coming next

A new Proposals extension is in development. It is aimed at organisations that contract for services, subscriptions or products and gives Joomla a structured way to author, send and manage proposals through to acceptance. The feature list is taking shape; this is the part of the development cycle where input from real users sharpens the eventual product.
